You receive an "Access denied" error message when you check out or upload a document to a document library in SharePoint Portal Server 2001 if you connect to the server by using its FQDN
You may find that you cannot access documents in a document library in a Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 workspace if you connect to the server on your extranet by using the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the server. When you try to check out or upload a document to the document library, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
You do not experience these symptoms if you connect to the server by using Web folders or by using the network basic input/output system (NetBIOS) name of the server.
This issue may occur in situations when you use an FQDN to connect to the server and one or both of the following conditions are true:
- The FQDN of the server is not configured in the proxy settings of Microsoft Internet Explorer.
- The authentication settings of the Web site in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) are configured incorrectly.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Make sure that the FQDN of the server is configured correctly in the Exceptions list in the Proxy Settings dialog box in Internet Explorer. To configure the proxy settings in Internet Explorer, use one of the following methods:
- Manually configure the proxy settings. To do this, follow the steps that are listed in the "Configure the Proxy Setting on the SharePoint Portal Server Computer" section of the "Deploying Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server Across an Extranet" white paper. For more information about how to obtain this white paper, see the "More Information" section.
- Use the SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Extranet Configuration tool to configure the proxy settings.
- Restart IIS. To do this, follow these steps:
- At a command prompt, type iisreset, and then press ENTER
- Type exit, and then press ENTER to close the Command Prompt window.
- Test to determine whether the issue is resolved. If the issue is resolved, you do not have to follow the remaining steps in this article. If the issue is not resolved, go to step 4.
- In IIS, delete the Web site that is used by the SharePoint Portal Server 2001 extranet site.
- Use the SharePoint Portal Server 2001 Extranet Configuration tool to create a new Web site in IIS for the SharePoint Portal Server 2001 workspace and to configure the proxy settings for Internet Explorer.
