SYMPTOMS

You create a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 advertisement for a program that can run only on specific operating systems or that requires a specific service pack level. However, the advertisement can run on computers that are running SMS 2003 Advanced Client when these computers are also running unsupported operating systems or do not have a required service pack installed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if all the following conditions are true:
  • Your SMS 2003 hierarchy includes parent sites that have an SMS 2003 service pack installed.
  • Your SMS 2003 hierarchy includes child sites that do not have an SMS 2003 service pack installed. Or the child sites have an SMS 2003 service pack installed that is an earlier version than the service pack that is installed on the parent site.
  • You create the package on an SMS 2003 parent site that has an SMS 2003 service pack installed that is later than the SMS 2003 service pack that is installed on the child site.
  • The computer that is running SMS 2003 Advanced Client and that runs the advertised program is a member of a child site that does not have the same service pack installed as the parent site where you created the package.
  • The program that you advertise requires a specific operating system or service pack to run on the SMS 2003 client of the child site. However, the specific operating system or service pack did not exist when the SMS 2003 service pack was installed on the child site.

MORE INFORMATION

SMS 2003 Service Pack 1 includes an update for operating systems and for service packs. This update can be targeted when you distribute software to SMS 2003 client computers. On computers that do not have SMS 2003 SP1 installed, this hotfix updates the list of supported operating systems and of supported service packs.

Important If you apply this hotfix to a parent site that does not have a service pack installed, but you do not update child sites with the same hotfix, this problem will occur.

We recommend that you plan your SMS 2003 site service pack upgrades to include all sites in your SMS hierarchy.
