You may receive an "Error 1920. Service RtcSrv (RtcSrv) failed to start" error message when you try to install Live Communications Server 2003
When you try to install Microsoft Office Live Communications Server 2003, you may receive the following error message:
Error 1920. Service RtcSrv (RtcSrv) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.
This problem may occur if the RTCHSDomainServices group that is used to start the Live Communications Server 2003 service (RtcSvr.exe) does not belong to the Administrators group.
To resolve this problem, add the RTCHSDomainServices group to the Administrators group and then click
Retry in the error message dialog box. To add the RTCHSDomainServices group to the Administrators group, follow these steps.
Note If you canceled the Setup program after you received the error message, you must run Setup again after you follow these steps.
- Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Administrative Tools.
- In the Administrative Tools dialog box, click Active Directory Users and Computers.
- In the Active Directory Users and Computers dialog box, expand YourDomainName in the left pane under Saved Queries.
- Click Users, right-click RTCHSDomainServices in the right pane, and then click Properties.
- In the RTCHSDomainServices Properties dialog box, click the Member Of tab, and then click Add.
- In the Select Groups dialog box, type Administrators, click Check Names, and then click OK two times.
Note If you remove the RTCHSDomainServices group from the Administrators group, RtcSrv.exe will not start when the computer restarts.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
