You receive an "Invalid Agent Configuration Information" error message from the Microsoft Operations Manager Agent Setup Wizard when you try to manually install the Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Agent

SYMPTOMS

When you try to manually install the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 agent by running the MOMAgent.msi file from a network share, you may receive the following error message in the Microsoft Operations Manager Agent Setup Wizard:
Invalid Agent Configuration Information

This problem occurs when the Management Group name is:

- Empty or Null
- "Default"
- Already exists on this computer
- Contains Special Characters. The Management Group name should not contain the following special characters: (:>)~!@#%\*+$|,&='["]/<.{;?>}
- If the agent had MOM 2000 SP1, some registry keys were not uninstalled properly during the MOM 2000 SP1 uninstallation, or during the MOM 2000 SP1 to MOM 2005 agent upgrade.

To continue Setup, go back and change the Management Group name.

CAUSE

This problem typically occurs when the MOM 2005 Management Group name is misspelled or contains characters that are not valid.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must verify the Management Group name. In the Microsoft Operations Manager Agent Setup Wizard, click Next to return to the previous page. Then, verify the management group name. To do verify the management group name, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Operations Manager 2005, and then click Administrator Console.
  2. In the MOM 2005 Administrator console, expand Microsoft Operations Manager (ServerName), where ServerName is the name of the computer that is running MOM 2005.
  3. Click Management Packs.
  4. In the right pane of the MOM 2005 Administrator console, under Management Packs, verify the name that is listed in the Management Group field.
  5. On the Agent Configuration page of the Microsoft Operations Manager Agent Setup Wizard, type the correct name of the management group, and then click Next
  6. Follow the remaining instructions to complete the Microsoft Operations Manager Agent Setup Wizard.
