SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade to Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 from Small Business Server 2000, you may receive the following error message:
You must install Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 Service Pack 1 and update before upgrading.

CAUSE

This issue may occur in any one of the following scenarios:
  • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is not installed on your computer.
  • The ISA Server 2000: Required Updates for Windows Server 2003 (Isahf255.exe) update is not installed on your computer.
  • ISA Server 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) is installed on your computer, but the Isahf255.exe update is not installed.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Install ISA Server 2000 SP1 if it is not installed on your computer, and then make sure that the Isahf255.exe update is also installed. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Download and install ISA Server 2000 SP1 if it is not installed.

To obtain ISA Server 2000 SP1, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc750281.aspx (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc750281.aspx)
  2. Make sure that the Isahf255.exe update is installed on your computer. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Locate the following registry subkey:
      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fpc\hotfixes\sp1\255
Note If this subkey exists, the Isahf255.exe update is already installed.
    3. If the 255 subkey is not in the registry, download and install the Isahf255.exe update. To obtain the Isahf255.exe update, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
      http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=77d89f87-5205-4779-b1ab-fc338283b2d9&DisplayLang=en (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=77d89f87-5205-4779-b1ab-fc338283b2d9&DisplayLang=en)

Method 2

If ISA Server 2000 SP2 is installed on your computer, follow these steps to manually create the 255 registry subkey:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fpc\hotfixes\sp1
  3. Right-click the sp1 subkey, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type 255, and then press ENTER.
  5. Quit Registry Editor.
Note ISA Server 2000 SP2 includes more recent files than the files that are included in the Isahf255.exe update.
