Office 2003 Service Pack 1 installs successfully but not all Office 2003 programs are updated

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Office 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) from the Microsoft Office Update Web site, the installation of the service pack may complete successfully. However, all the Office 2003 programs may not be updated correctly to the Service Pack 1 level.

Note To determine the version of Office 2003 that you have installed, see the "More Information" section.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when all the following conditions are true:
  • You have Microsoft Windows Installer 3.0 installed on your computer.

Note Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 will install Windows Installer 3.0 on your computer.
  • You updated your Office 2003 installation with the following updates:
    • Office 2003 Service Pack 1
    • Update for Outlook 2003: Junk E-mail Filter (KB870765)
  • You downloaded or installed the Update for Outlook 2003: Junk E-mail Filter (KB870765) on or before August 5, 2004.
Note This problem does not occur if you install the Update for Outlook 2003: Junk E-mail Filter (KB870765) after you install Office 2003 SP1.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem and to make sure that all the Office 2003 programs are updated correctly, repair Office 2003.

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In the Currently installed programs list, click Microsoft Office program 2003, and then click the Click here for support information link.
  4. Click Repair.
Note You may have to insert the original CD-ROM that you used to install Office 2003.

MORE INFORMATION

The information in the About dialog box for some of the Office 2003 programs will display SP1 with the correct file version information for the Mso.dll file that is installed on your computer. However, the part of the version information that refers to the Office 2003 program executable file (*.exe) may not show the correct SP1 version.
