MOM 2005 agents use less than the maximum network bandwidth that you specify

SYMPTOMS

After you specify the network bandwidth that a Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 agent will use, the actual bandwidth that is used is less than the amount that you specified. The MOM 2005 agent does not use the full bandwidth that you specified, regardless of how much data the agent sends.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the MOM 2005 agent throttles bandwidth before the data is compressed. Therefore, the actual data that is sent may be less than the maximum amount that you specified.

MORE INFORMATION

The Maximum amount of data per second option in the MOM 2005 agent properties configures the maximum bandwidth that is used by a MOM 2005 agent. This option only affects uncompressed data, and does not affect the compressed data that is actually sent. Typically, the compression ratio in MOM 2005 is approximately 4:1.

Note This ratio is not exact and varies based on the type of data that is compressed.

For example, if you want a MOM 2005 agent to use a maximum bandwidth of approximately 1 Kilobits Per Second (Kbps), you must configure the Maximum amount of data per second option to 4 Kbps.

To configure the MOM 2005 agent bandwidth, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Operations Manager 2005, and then click Administrator Console.
  2. Expand Administration, click Global Settings, and then double-click Agents.
  3. On the Communications tab, specify a value for Maximum amount of data per second, and then click OK.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
