An advertisement for a program that uses the Software Updates Installation Agent does not run in Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you advertise a program that uses the Software Updates Installation Agent program (Patchinstall.exe), and you do not specify a recurrence pattern for the advertisement, the advertisement does not run on Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 client computers.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps to specify a recurrence pattern for the advertisement:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Systems Management Server, and then click SMS Administrator Console.
  2. Expand Site Database (SiteCode - SiteName), and then click Advertisements.
  3. In the console tree, right-click the advertisement that you want to modify, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Schedule tab, click the new mandatory assignment button, and then click Schedule.

Note The new mandatory assignment button has a yellow star.
  5. In the Schedule dialog box, click one of the following options in the Recurrence pattern area, and then accept or change the default recurrence schedule:
    • Interval
    • Weekly
    • Monthly
  6. Click OK three times.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

After you set a recurrence pattern for the advertisement, you configure client computers to periodically evaluate new settings and updates that you authorize. We recommend that you choose a setting that is more frequent than the rate at which you authorize new updates. This setting also controls how frequently users can be reminded of pending updates.
