You receive an "Invalid Patch File Error" error message when you install Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots

SYMPTOMS

After you type your product key and then continue the installation of Microsoft Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots, you receive the following error message:
Invalid Patch File Error
After you click OK to the error message, you receive the following error message:
Retcode positive - 32769
After you click OK to the error message, the installation is completed successfully.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the installation program cannot read the 1.03 update files on the game CD-ROM.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Download and install the latest Microsoft Rise of Nations update

To obtain the latest update for Rise of Nations, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/games/riseofnations/downloads.aspx (http://www.microsoft.com/games/riseofnations/downloads.aspx)

Method 2: Install the 1.03 update files manually

To manually install the 1.03 update that is located on the game CD-ROM, follow these steps.

Note Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Install Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots if it is not installed.

    Note Click OK when you receive the error messages that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
  2. In Microsoft Windows Explorer, locate the Patch folder such as D:\Patch on the game CD-ROM.
  3. Locate the following files in the Patch folder:
    • Patch.rtp
    • Patcher.exe
  4. Copy the two files in step 3 to the Rise of Nations folder on the drive where you installed Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots. For example, copy the two files in step 3 to the drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Rise of Nations folder.
  5. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
  6. At the command prompt, type each line, and then press ENTER.

    Note In the following procedure, you may have to change to the drive where Rise of Nations is installed. To do this, type the drive letter and a colon such as e:, and then press ENTER at the command prompt:
    cd\

    cd program files\microsoft games\rise of nations

    patcher patch.rtp
  7. After the update is completed successfully, type exit, and then press ENTER.
