Notes

UAA describes a class driver initiative for computer audio solutions that are supported in Microsoft Windows operating systems.

An audio device that is UAA-compliant can rely on the operating system for driver support. Therefore, hardware vendors do not have to supply a custom driver for a device.

A High Definition Audio device complies with the Intel High Definition Audio specification. A High Definition Audio device connects to the PCI bus or to the PCI Express bus. A High Definition Audio device can reside on an internal audio card, or the device can be part of an integrated motherboard chip set.

In the spring of 2004, Intel Corporation released the first hardware that includes High Definition Audio-compliant solutions. The update that is described in this article supports the Intel High Definition Audio-compliant hardware.

The audio industry solution that has been used in the past is the AC’97 Audio codec. UAA includes the following improvements for users, OEMs, and hardware manufacturers.

Improvements for users

  • Easier installation of audio peripherals
  • Easier installation of audio drivers
  • Better system stability
  • Better performance
  • Glitch-free audio
  • Improved security of the content that you want to help protect
  • Fewer vendor-supplied drivers
  • Less need to upgrade drivers
  • Guaranteed basic audio support for UAA-compliant devices

Improvements for OEMs and hardware manufacturers

  • Less software development, testing, and support
  • Less exposure to product support calls and to product returns
  • Easier phase-out of products that are at the "end of life"
If you install, remove, and then re-install this update, the update is no longer listed in Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. Therefore, you cannot remove this update from your computer. To work around this problem, follow these steps.

Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
322756  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=322756/ ) How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SP3\KB888111
  3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  4. Click Yes, and then exit Registry Editor.

Seems to cause more problems than it fixed.

The sound card on my eMachines T5026 has stopped working. Before concluding that the device is broken, I'd like to try re-installing drivers. The card is shown on the specs list as Intel High Definition 6-channel audio (5.1). I've searched Intel and Microsoft, and it appears that the drivers for HD audio are supposed to be in the OS. Do separate drivers exist anywhere?

You can download it from HP website. Just look for Compaq DC7600 Ultra-Slim in driver download. I have a problem though with the audio package. When I run the install, it tries to connect to self update server, and since I don't have any network connection from Windows, I can't install it. I download drivers from linux and copy to Windows partition. Windows is only for gaming (no network whatsoever). I don't know why Windows assume we are all connected to the internet when installing drivers. What happens when I'm on the road without internet and I have to re-install a crashed Windows from scratch on a laptop? Even worse, what if I have to download the network driver, and I don't even have a network driver to even connect to the internet?

Download SP30739.exe from HP. http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/hpcpqdt/us/download/22799.html Then open the exe with WinRar. Open the \US folder and extract the setup.dat file. Rename the file to setup.dat.rar to view the contents with WinRar or rename to setup.dat.exe to run the KB888111 package.
