Systems Management Server 2.0 secondary site cannot communicate with a parent site in a multi-tiered hierarchy

SYMPTOMS

When you move a Microsoft Systems Management server (SMS) 2.0 secondary site in a multi-tiered SMS 2.0 environment hierarchy, the secondary site may no longer communicate with the parent site or with any other SMS site. Additionally, you may experience the following issues:
  • Any site control changes made on the parent site are not propagated to the secondary site.
  • Any changes made on the secondary site are not propagated to the primary site database.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the site control file serial number is not synchronized with the parent site control file serial number. When this problem occurs, the secondary site cannot communicate with the parent site or with any other SMS site.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;[LN];CNTACTMS (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;%5Bln%5D;cntactms)

Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific update in question.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
