Important This article contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs. For information about how to back up, restore, and edit the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a Microsoft Access database that is located on a Web server on the Internet by using Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Access cannot open this file.
This file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site. Microsoft Access will not open the file due to potential security problems.
To open the file, copy it to your computer or an accessible network location.
However, you can use Microsoft FrontPage 2002 to open the database over the Internet.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if you have Microsoft Access 2002 installed on your computer. In this situation, FrontPage 2003 may not be able to open the Access database over the Internet. This is because the temporary folder that is used by FrontPage 2003 is located in the temporary folder that is used by Microsoft Internet Explorer:
C:\Documents and Settings\User_Profile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir
Therefore, the temporary files that are created by FrontPage 2003 are subject to the Internet zone security settings. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
840467   (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=840467/ ) The FrontPage 2003 temporary folder location has changed from the location that is used by earlier versions of Microsoft FrontPage

WORKAROUND

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this issue, modify the registry to change the path for the FrontPageTempDir folder. This will change the location where FrontPage 2003 stores temporary files.

Follow these steps, and then quit Registry Editor:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\FrontPage
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
  4. Type FrontPageTemp, and then press ENTER.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
  6. Type C:\Documents and Settings\<User_Profile>\Local Settings\Temp, and then click OK.
