You receive an "upgrade verification" message when you start an Office 2004 for Mac program

SYMPTOMS

After you install the Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Standard Edition upgrade, you receive the following error message when you start an Office 2004 for Mac program:
Upgrade Verification

To continue installation, select the folder that contains the earlier version of the software (Microsoft Office X folder, for example). The folder can be located on either your computer or the CD-ROM from which you originally installed the earlier version of the software.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Office 2004 upgrade verification program cannot find a qualifying product that is installed on the computer.
