You receive an error message when you try to upload a file to a document library in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or in Windows SharePoint Services

SYMPTOMS

When you try to upload a file to a document library in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, you experience one or both of the following symptoms:
  • You connect to the document library by using a Web browser. When you try to upload a file to the document library, you receive the following error message:
    Form Validation Error

Please correct the information you provided by following these steps, then submit the information again:
The file or folder name "Document Library/FileName" contains characters that are not permitted. Please use a different name.
  • You connect to the document library by using Web folders. When you try to copy a file to the document library, you receive the following error message:
An error occurred copying some or all of the selected files.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the file name contains characters that are not supported in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 or in Windows SharePoint Services. For example, this issue occurs if the file name starts with one or more spaces. You experience the symptoms in the "Symptoms" section if one or more of the following conditions are true:
  • The file name contains one or more of the following characters:
    ~ # % & * { } | \ : " < > ? /
  • The file name contains one or more leading spaces. That is, the file name starts with one or more spaces.
  • The file name contains consecutive periods.
  • The file name contains a leading period.
  • The file name contains a trailing period. That is, the file name ends with a period.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the file. Remove the characters that are not supported from the file name. For example, if the file name contains leading spaces, remove the leading spaces from the file name.
