SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft XML 3.0, after a Microsoft Internet Explorer-based application loads several XML files that reference XDR schema and perform other XML-related tasks, the application stops responding.

Note This problem occurs when the Internet Explorer-based application uses XML data islands to load an XML file that references an XDR schema.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Microsoft XML 3.0 causes an object that is still being used to be included in a list of objects that are scheduled to be freed. The state of the object is inconsistent with being in the free list. This inconsistency causes garbage collection to enter an infinite loop. This infinite loop causes the application to stop responding.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Microsoft XML 3.0 Service Pack 5 (SP5)

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other software updates.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
