You receive a "The computer could not be found in the database" message when you try to push install the Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 agent

SYMPTOMS

When you try to push install the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 agent to a computer, the agent is not installed, and you receive the following message:
The MOM Server received a request to process computer with idComputer 5013babf-7061-4945-ba47-3689ca2737d2, but the computer could not be found in the database.
You receive this message when the following conditions are true:
  • You installed the Microsoft File Replication Service Management Pack.
  • MOM discovered the computer after the computer was added to the Ultrasound database.

CAUSE

This problem is caused by a capitalization mismatch between the computer name that is stored by the Ultrasound tool and the computer name that Active Directory supplies to MOM 2005.

Computer names are stored in lowercase letters in the Ultrasound database. For example, the following computer name could be stored in the Ultrasound database:
computername1
When the File Replication Service Management Pack creates an entry for a particular computer in the OnePoint database, the management pack extracts the computer name from the Ultrasound database. Any computers that were not already discovered by MOM 2005 appear as unmanaged computers in the MOM Administrator console.

When you try to push install the MOM 2005 agent to an unmanaged computer, MOM 2005 contacts Active Directory and receives the computer name in capital letters. For example, MOM 2005 could receive the following computer name from Active Directory:
COMPUTERNAME1
Because of the capitalization mismatch, MOM 2005 does not recognize the entry in the OnePoint database.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, delete the unmanaged computer, and then run computer discovery again. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Microsoft Operations Manager 2005, and then click Administrator Console.
  2. Expand Microsoft Operations Manager (server name), where server name represents the name of the MOM server.
  3. Expand Administration, expand Computers, and then click Unmanaged Computers.
  4. Right-click the computer that you want to delete, and then click Delete.
  5. Under the Computers container, right-click Computer Discovery Rules, and then click Run Computer Discovery Now.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

Because the File Replication Service Management Pack obtains information from the Ultrasound database, we recommended that you deploy MOM 2005 agents on all File Replication service (FRS) computers before you install the management pack. If the management pack starts to monitor FRS computers that do not have the MOM 2005 agent installed, the computers are listed by MOM 2005 as unmanaged. If you try to install the MOM 2005 agent on the computers that are listed by MOM 2005 as unmanaged, the installation may not successfully finish.

The Ultrasound tool is a monitoring and troubleshooting tool for FRS. The Ultrasound tool measures the health of FRS replica sets and provides health ratings of replica sets and historical information about replica sets. You can use the tool to monitor the progress of replication and to detect problems that can cause replication to become backlogged or stopped.
