This article describes the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 issue that is fixed in the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package that is dated March 23, 2005.
Issue that the hotfix package fixes
This hotfix package fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
- You receive a "Request timed out" error message when you try to create an audience that uses the "Member of" operator
Consider the following scenario. Your organization has a parent domain and many child domains. For example, your organization has more than 120 child domains. SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) is installed on a server in one of the child domains. In the child domain where SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP1 is installed, you create an Active Directory directory service global security group. Then, you add users from the same child domain to the global security group. When you try to create a new audience that uses the Member of operator in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP1, you receive the following error message: The audience is not created.
This problem occurs if the rule that you configure for the audience includes the global security group as members of the audience. That is, this problem occurs if all the following conditions are true: - The rule uses the User operand.
- The rule uses the Member of operator.
- The name of the global security group is specified in the Value box.
To verify the name of the security group, SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP1 enumerates, and then queries every domain in the forest. In a scenario where an organization has many domains, this operation may time out.
