You receive a 2269 event message when you try to start a worker process in IIS 6.0

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start a worker process (W3wp.exe) in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0, you may receive a message that is similar to the following in the Application log in Event Viewer:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: W3SVC-WP
Event Category: None
Event ID: 2269
User: N/A
Computer: ServerName
Description: The worker process failed to initialize the http.sys communication or the w3svc communication layer and therefore could not be started. The data field contains the error number.

The error number in the data field is 0000: 80070057.

You may also receive an error message that is similar to the following when you try to view a Web page:
Service Unavailable

CAUSE

This issue can occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The worker process is configured to use an identity that is different from Local System.
  • The Everyone group and the User group do not have the Bypass Traverse Checking user right. By default, the Everyone group and the User group have this user right.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restore the Bypass Traverse Checking user right for the Everyone group and the User group. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type gpedit.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Expand Computer Configuration, expand Windows Settings, expand Security Settings, expand Local Policies, and then expand User Rights Assignment.
  3. Right-click Bypass traverse checking, and then click Properties.
  4. Click Add User or Group.
  5. Type Users;Everyone, and then click OK.

Note If you receive a message that an object named "Users" cannot be found, click Object Types, click to select the Groups check box, and then click OK two times.
  6. Start the worker process in IIS.

MORE INFORMATION

If you do not want to give the Everyone group and the User group the Bypass Traverse Checking user right, you may be able to resolve this issue if you give the IIS_WPG group the Bypass Traverse Checking user right.
  5. Type IIS_WPG, and then click OK.

Note If you receive a message that an object named "IIS_WPG" cannot be found, click Object Types, click to select the Groups check box, and then click OK two times.
  6. Start the worker process in IIS.

perfect solution! just can't imagine why Microsoft doesn't provide this information on their own website (they got the error code). Typical Microsoft dump way of doing things!
