A red X may appear instead of the image or the object when you open the Office 2003 document from an Internet location, from a Web folder, or from any location from the Internet security zone
When you open a document in any one of the programs that are listed in the "Applies to" section, images or objects in the document may not appear. A red X may appear instead of the image or the object. This issue may occur when you open the document from an Internet location, from a Web folder, or from any location that the Microsoft Windows redirector recognizes as being from the Internet security zone.
Notes- This issue does not occur if you copy the document to the computer before you open the document.
- This issue may not occur if you use a back slash (\) instead of a forward slash (/) in the path that you use to open the document. When you use a back slash, you indicate that this document is a file instead of a URL location.
This issue may occur when either of the following conditions is true:
- The Content.mso folder does not exist.
- The Content.mso folder has insufficient permissions. These permissions prevent users from writing to the folder.
To resolve this issue, make sure that the Content.mso folder exists and that all users and processes have full permissions to the folder. By default, the Content.mso folder is a hidden system folder that is located on the computer in the following location:
C:\Documents and Settings\User name\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
The Content.mso folder is the folder in which Office 2003 objects are cached. Office 2003 objects include pictures that are recognized as being from the Internet security zone. If the objects cannot be cached in the Content.mso folder, a red X will appear instead of the object in the Office 2003 document when you open an Office 2003 document from an Internet location, from a Web folder, or from any location from the Internet security zone.
Note The Content.mso folder is created the first time Office 2003 has to cache temporary files that are identified as being from the Internet security zone. The Internet security zone relies on the Windows redirector and on the Web client path that is used to access the document.
