SYMPTOMS

When you use the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to back up the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6 metabase, the IIS 6 Metabase writer incorrectly tries to back up the Metabase.bin file.

You expect the IIS 6 Metabase writer to back up the Metabase.xml file.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you use the IIS 6 Metabase writer on a computer that is running one of the following operating systems:
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition (Itanium)
Note Microsoft Windows XP Professional includes IIS 5.1. IIS 5.1 uses the Metabase.bin file to store IIS settings. However, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows XP Professional 64-Bit Edition for Itanium-based systems includes IIS 6. IIS 6 uses the Metabase.xml file to store IIS settings. The IIS 6 Metabase writer on these operating systems incorrectly tries to back up the Metabase.bin file instead of the Metabase.xml file.
