If you disable the Ose.exe file, Microsoft Office updates do not install when you use Microsoft Windows Server Update Services or the Microsoft Update Web site to deploy software updates and hotfixes to computers in the organization
This article is intended for advanced computer users. If you are not comfortable with advanced troubleshooting, you might want to ask someone for help or contact support. For information about how to do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
When you deploy software updates and hotfixes to computers in your organization by using Microsoft Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) or by using the Microsoft Update Web site, some Microsoft Office updates are not successfully installed on certain client computers. In this situation, the user on the client computer may receive the following message in the
Automatic Updates dialog box:

This issue may occur if the Office Source Engine service (Ose.exe) startup type is set to
Disabled. By default, the Office Source Engine service startup type is set to
Manual. Microsoft Windows Installer uses a custom action to start the Office Source Engine service. However, Windows Installer cannot start the Office Source Engine service if the Office Source Engine service is disabled.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Determine the status of the Office Source Engine service. To do this, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
- In the list of services, double-click Office Source Engine.
- View the option that appears in the Startup type list.
- If the startup type is set to Disabled, change the startup type to Manual. To do this, click Manual in the Startup type list, and then click OK.
- Try to install the Office Update packages again.

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
