Subfiles and subfolders are modified when you rename the parent folder in the Windows SharePoint Services document library

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You create a folder in the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services document library. Additionally, you create subfolders under the folder that you created. Then, multiple users upload some files to or create other folders under the Windows SharePoint Services document library that you created.

In this scenario, you find that the subfiles and the subfolders that are in the folder are modified when you try to rename the parent folder of the Windows SharePoint Services document library that you created. Specifically, you find the following modifications:
  • The time that is in the Modified area is the time that the parent folder was renamed.
  • The name that is in the Modified By area is changed to the person who renamed the parent folder.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.

This begs the question... if you are being presented with information that indicates that the documents described in this article have been modified (by design of course), if you have versioning turned on within this Library, does changing this parent folder create a new Version for each of the documents SharePoint has thoughtfully changed the Modified and Modified By fields on? (If not... then "by design my b*tt"... pardon my French and the run-on sentence from heck... I say this is more like lazy design).
