After you install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP1 on the evaluation version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you cannot upgrade or overwrite the evaluation version to the original release version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003
Consider the following scenario. You are running the
evaluation version of Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003. Then, you
install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) on the evaluation
version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003. After you install SharePoint Portal
Server 2003 SP1, you cannot upgrade or overwrite the evaluation version of
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to the original release version of SharePoint
Portal Server 2003. Additionally, you receive the following error
message:
Installing the Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal
Server 2003 120-day Evaluation edition on a server on which SharePoint Portal
Server 2003 is already installed is not supported.
This issue occurs when you have installed SharePoint Portal
Server 2003 SP1 or a later version on the evaluation version of SharePoint
Portal Server 2003. Doing this upgrades the version number of the SharePoint
database. The schema version number of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP1 is
higher than the schema version number of the original release version of
SharePoint Portal Server 2003. Therefore, you cannot upgrade or overwrite the
evaluation version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003.
For example, if
you install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP1 on the evaluation version of
SharePoint Portal Server 2003, the version number of SharePoint Portal Server
2003 is equivalent to the version number of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP1.
The product is still an evaluation copy. The current version number is higher
than the original release version number of SharePoint Portal Server 2003.
Therefore, you receive an error message during the upgrade
process.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Create a backup of the current portal site.
Note Before you perform the backup and restore procedures, verify the
version of Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services and SharePoint Portal Server
2003 that you are running. After you install the original release version of
SharePoint Portal Server 2003, you must update SharePoint Portal Server 2003
and Windows SharePoint Services to the version that you were running before you
performed the backup and restore procedures. To verify the version of Windows
SharePoint Services that you are running, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to All
Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then
click SharePoint Central Administration.
- On the Central Administration page,
click Configure virtual server setting in the Virtual
Server Configuration section.
- On the Virtual Server List page, in
the Version column, you can see the version of Windows
SharePoint Services that you are running.
To verify the version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 that
you are running, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Control
Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove
Programs.
- Click Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server
2003, and then click Click here for support
information. In the Support Info dialog box, you can
see the version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 that you are
running.
- Uninstall the evaluation version of SharePoint Portal
Server 2003.
- Install the original release version of SharePoint Portal
Server 2003.
- Install Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 1
(SP1).
- Install SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP1.
- Restart the computer.
- Restore the backup to the portal site.
This
behavior is by design.
The information in this article applies to all the service
packs and hotfixes for the SharePoint Portal Server 2003 evaluation edition
that you can upgrade to the original release version of SharePoint Portal
Server 2003.
The following table shows Windows SharePoint Services and
SharePoint Portal Server 2003 version information.

| Version of Windows SharePoint Services or SharePoint Portal

If you try to install SharePoint Portal Server 2003
Service Pack 2 (SP2) on the evaluation version of SharePoint Portal Server
2003, you receive the following error message:
The
expected version of the product was not found on your system.
You
might have SharePoint Portal Server SP1 together with the Windows SharePoint
Services security update or Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 (SP2)
installed on the evaluation version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003. These
versions must match the original release version of SharePoint Portal Server
2003 and of Windows SharePoint Services before you restore the backup of the
evaluation version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to the original release
version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003. If the versions do not match, you
receive the following error message:
The database schema
is too old.
