Some exported fields display a number sign (#) delimiter when you export a list to Excel 2002 from a Windows SharePoint Services Web site

SYMPTOMS

When you export a list to Microsoft Excel 2002 from a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site, some exported fields display a number sign (#) delimiter.

For example, you may experience the following symptoms when this problem occurs:
  • The Assigned To field appears as "1;#User Name" in Excel 2002 after you export a list. Excel 2002 does not remove the ID. Additionally, a delimiter is added between the ID and the name.
  • If the exported list contains a calculated field, such as "=Title," the value of the calculated field appears as "string,#value."

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a design limitation in Excel 2002 when you use Excel 2002 together with Windows SharePoint Services.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:
  • Manually remove the unwanted delimiters and IDs.
  • Upgrade to Microsoft Office 2003.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0
  • Microsoft Excel 2002 Standard Edition

Microsoft also seems to use the # delimiter when displaying a multi-choice formatted column in a dataview web part. WSS, FrontPage 2003. Would be interested in a solution to removing the #.
