You are not prompted for a user name and for a password when you use FrontPage to publish a Web site or to open a Web page on a remote server
You are not prompted for a user name and for a password when you use Microsoft FrontPage to perform either of the following tasks:
- Publish a Web site to a remote server.
- Open a Web page that resides on a remote server.
Alternatively, you may experience the following behavior when you perform these tasks:
- You receive the following error message:
The folder <sitename/folder> isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an
unavailable location, protected with a password or the file name contains a"" or a
"\".
- You receive the following error message:
The folder isn't accessible. The folder may be located on an unavailable volume or
may be protected by a password.
- You cannot open the Web site. When this behavior occurs, you do not receive an error message.
Note This behavior continues to occur after you verify that the Web page is in the location that you specified and that the Web host is using the latest FrontPage Server Extensions.
This problem occurs if the
User Authentication setting for the Internet zone is set to
Anonymous logon in Microsoft Internet Explorer. The Internet Explorer settings control the way that you log on to a remote server.
Note The problem may also occur if you added the Web site to the Local intranet zone, to the Trusted sites zone, or to the Restricted sites zone. Then, you set the
User Authentication setting for the zone to
Anonymous logon.
To work around this problem, follow these steps:
- Use either of the following methods to open the Internet Options dialog box:
- Use FrontPage:
- Start FrontPage.
- On the Tools, click Options.
- Click the General tab, and then click Proxy Settings.
- Use Internet Explorer:
- Start Internet Explorer.
- On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
- Click the Security tab.
- Under Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings, click Internet, and then click Custom Level.
- Under Settings, click Prompt for user name and password under User Authentication.
- Click OK two times.
Steps to reproduce the problem
- Start Internet Explorer.
- On the Tools, click Internet Options.
- Click the Security tab.
- Under Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings, click Internet, and then click Custom Level.
- Under Settings, click Anonymous logon under User Authentication.
- Click OK two times.
- Start FrontPage, and then try to open a Web page that resides on a remote server.
You experience the behavior that is described in the "Symptoms" section.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
