SYMPTOMS

You are not prompted for a user name and for a password when you use Microsoft FrontPage to perform either of the following tasks:
  • Publish a Web site to a remote server.
  • Open a Web page that resides on a remote server.
Alternatively, you may experience the following behavior when you perform these tasks:
  • You receive the following error message:
The folder <sitename/folder> isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable location, protected with a password or the file name contains a"" or a "\".
  • You receive the following error message:
The folder isn't accessible. The folder may be located on an unavailable volume or may be protected by a password.
  • You cannot open the Web site. When this behavior occurs, you do not receive an error message.

Note This behavior continues to occur after you verify that the Web page is in the location that you specified and that the Web host is using the latest FrontPage Server Extensions.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the User Authentication setting for the Internet zone is set to Anonymous logon in Microsoft Internet Explorer. The Internet Explorer settings control the way that you log on to a remote server.

Note The problem may also occur if you added the Web site to the Local intranet zone, to the Trusted sites zone, or to the Restricted sites zone. Then, you set the User Authentication setting for the zone to Anonymous logon.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Use either of the following methods to open the Internet Options dialog box:
    • Use FrontPage:
      1. Start FrontPage.
      2. On the Tools, click Options.
      3. Click the General tab, and then click Proxy Settings.
    • Use Internet Explorer:
      1. Start Internet Explorer.
      2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Security tab.
  3. Under Select a Web content zone to specify its security settings, click Internet, and then click Custom Level.
  4. Under Settings, click Prompt for user name and password under User Authentication.
  5. Click OK two times.
