Error message after you install Antigen: "Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start

INTRODUCTION

If the Antigen installation fails, the following error may be logged in the event log:
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start
This error is also logged if you stop the Antigen installation before it is completed. This article describes the "Error 1068" error.

MORE INFORMATION

When the Antigen installation process starts, Antigen stops the following services as appropriate:
  • Microsoft Exchange Server services
  • Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server services
  • Instant Messaging services
Near the end of the Antigen installation process, Antigen restarts these services. If these services cannot be restarted, the "Error 1068" error is logged in the event log.

The Antigen services depend on the Exchange Server services, the SharePoint Portal Server services, or the Instant Messaging services, depending on the version of Antigen that you are running. For example, when the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service is stopped, the AntigenService service is also stopped.

When the "Error 1068" error is logged, view the Dependencies tab for the Antigen services to make sure that the services that the Antigen services depend on are not stopped. To view the Dependencies tab, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Right-click the Antigen service that you want to examine, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the Dependencies tab.
If the service that the Antigen service depends on is stopped, right-click the service in the Services console, and then click Start. Then, try to install Antigen again.
