SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 cannot be installed because this server is not running a Microsoft Windows 2003 or later operating system.
We do not support the installation of Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems. However, this error message is incorrect.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Although Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 is not supported on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems, Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 is supported on a computer that is running an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003 if the computer is running in 32-bit emulation mode. For more information about how to configure Windows SharePoint Services to run on a computer that is running an x64-based version of Windows Server 2003, see the Windows SharePoint Services Administrator's Guide. The Windows SharePoint Services Administrator's Guide is frequently updated. Therefore, if you have an earlier version of the Windows SharePoint Services Administrator's Guide, obtain the latest version.
