A backup operation is not successful when you use the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore program to back up portal site content in SharePoint Portal Server 2003
When you use the SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore program to back up portal site content in Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003, the backup operation is not successful. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The configuration database could not be found from this server. In order to backup
any components you must first join this server to a farm.
This problem occurs if the user account that is used to create the backup does not have the Database Creators role and the Security Administrators role assigned in Microsoft SQL Server.
To work around this issue, follow these steps:
- Log off the current user account.
- Log on by using the user account that you used when you installed SharePoint Portal Server 2003. This user account is used to run the application pool that is used by the SharePoint Central Administration site in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).
- Click Start, point to All programs, point to SharePoint Portal Server, and then click SharePoint Portal Server Data Backup and Restore.
- Back up the portal site content.
This behavior is by design.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
