SharePoint Portal Server 2003 must use ASP.NET 1.1

INTRODUCTION

Internet Information Services (IIS) Web applications that are running Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or an earlier version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 must be configured to use ASP.NET 1.1. Running a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Web application under ASP.NET 2.x is not supported. If you try to run a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Web application under ASP.NET 2.x, you may experience unexpected consequences.

More recent versions of the .NET Framework, such as the .NET Framework 2.0, can be installed on the same computer that is running SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2. Additionally, other IIS Web applications, such as separate Web applications that are running only Windows SharePoint Services Service Pack 2 (SP2), can be configured to use ASP.NET 2.0. Windows SharePoint Services SP2 includes support for ASP.NET 2.0. Installing the .NET Framework 2.0 or a later version on versions of SharePoint Portal Server 2003 that are earlier than SharePoint Portal Server 2003 SP2 is not supported.

To determine the version of ASP.NET that is running on a specific Web application, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type inetmgr, and then click OK.
  2. In the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager console, expand the nodes until the Web application is visible under the Web Sites node.
  3. Right-click the Web application, and then click Properties.
  4. On the Properties page, click the ASP.NET tab, and then note the version of ASP.NET that is running on the Web application.
For Web applications that are running SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Service Pack 2 or an earlier version of SharePoint Portal Server 2003, the ASP.NET version that is indicated on the Properties page must be 1.1.x.

Note The specific version of ASP.NET 1.1, such as 1.1.4322, is expected to vary depending on updates that were applied to the computer.
