Error message when you open a message that is signed by a digital certificate that is issued by a third-party certification authority in Windows 98 or in Windows Millennium Edition: "Security Alert"

System TipThis article applies to a different version of Windows than the one you are using. Content in this article may not be relevant to you. Visit the Windows Vista Solution Center

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, or Microsoft Millennium Edition.
  • You open an e-mail message that is signed by a valid digital certificate.
  • This digital certificate is issued by a third-party certification authority (CA).
In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:
Security Alert
Digital ID may not be invalid or cannot determine the validity of this certificate. (Digital ID may be still valid or the validity of this certificate cannot be determined.)

CAUSE

You experience this problem if the certificate storage contains multiple CA certificates that have different expiration dates. Typically, the problem that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section does not occur with the certificate that has the longest validity period. However, this problem may occur with the certificate that has the shortest validity period.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, import the CA certificate that has the longest validity period again.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
