You receive a "Failed to start MOMCONN service" error message when you try to install MOM 2005 Service Pack 1

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Service Pack 1, you may receive the following error message:
Warning 25362. Failed to start MOMCONN service.
Setup will proceed, please examine your eventlog

CAUSE

The behavior occurs if the MOM-to-MOM Connector service (MOMConn.exe) is set to Disabled in the Services snap-in.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  2. Right-click the MOM-to-MOM Connector service, and then click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, click Automatic in the Startup type list.
  4. Click Start.
  5. When Service status is Started, click OK.
  6. Close the Services snap-in.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not manually disable the MOM-to-MOM Connector service before you install MOM 2005 Service Pack 1.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
