You cannot input more than 255 characters in the Text field of a document library or picture library in Windows SharePoint Services
Consider the following scenario. You create the
Multiple lines of text property for the columns that are in a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services document library or picture library. Then, you type content that contains more than 255 characters in the
Text field of a new document.
In this scenario, you receive the following error message if you type more than 255 characters in the
Text field of a new document:
Field Name can have no more than 255 characters.
Note The placeholder
Field Name is a placeholder for the name of the column in the list.
This issue occurs because of a design limitation in the following programs:
- Windows SharePoint Services
- Microsoft Office 2003 and earlier versions of Microsoft Office
The OLE property streams that are associated with Office do not support more than 255 characters. Additionally, if you change the character limit for the
Text field to more than 255 characters, you cannot demote the OLE property in the Office document.
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0
- Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003
Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
