Error message when you try to perform a mail merge in Outlook 2003 and in Outlook 2002: "The required file schdmapi.dll could not be loaded"
When you try to use the Microsoft Outlook Address Book as a data source for a mail merge operation in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or in Microsoft Outlook 2002, you receive the following error message:
The required file schdmapi.dll could not be loaded.
Please check your e-mail installation and reinstall Microsoft Word if necessary.
This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
- You click Mail Merge on the Tools menu to start the mail merge operation in Outlook 2003 and in Outlook 2002.
- You use the Outlook Address Book as a data source.
- Your use the Mailing labels document type setting.
To work around this issue, follow these steps:
- In Outlook 2003 or in Outlook 2002, open Contacts, and then click Mail Merge on the Tools menu.
- Use the default settings for all settings except for Document type. In the Document type box, click Mailing labels, and then click OK.
- When Microsoft Word starts, click OK to confirmation the selection.
- In the Mail Merge Helper dialog box, click Setup, select the mailing label format that you want, and then click OK.
- When the Setup button changes to an Edit button, click Edit, and then select the main
document. This opens a document that has blank labels.
- On the Tools menu, point to Letters and Mailings, and then click Mail Merge to view the Mail Merge task pane.
- Click Next in the Mail Merge task pane, click Add address block, and then click Update All Labels
to update the fields in each label.
- Click Next in the next two screens, and then click Edit Individual Labels.
- In the Merge to new document dialog box, click All, and then click OK.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
