SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the Microsoft Outlook Address Book as a data source for a mail merge operation in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or in Microsoft Outlook 2002, you receive the following error message:
The required file schdmapi.dll could not be loaded. Please check your e-mail installation and reinstall Microsoft Word if necessary.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You click Mail Merge on the Tools menu to start the mail merge operation in Outlook 2003 and in Outlook 2002.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  1. In Outlook 2003 or in Outlook 2002, open Contacts, and then click Mail Merge on the Tools menu.
  2. Use the default settings for all settings except for Document type. In the Document type box, click Mailing labels, and then click OK.
  3. When Microsoft Word starts, click OK to confirmation the selection.
  4. In the Mail Merge Helper dialog box, click Setup, select the mailing label format that you want, and then click OK.
  5. When the Setup button changes to an Edit button, click Edit, and then select the main document. This opens a document that has blank labels.
  6. On the Tools menu, point to Letters and Mailings, and then click Mail Merge to view the Mail Merge task pane.
  7. Click Next in the Mail Merge task pane, click Add address block, and then click Update All Labels to update the fields in each label.
