Error message when you try to merge two accounts or two contacts in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0: "There is a problem communicating with the Microsoft CRM server"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to merge two accounts or two contacts in Microsoft Dynamics CRM 3.0, you receive the following error message:
There is a problem communicating with the Microsoft CRM server. The server might be unavailable. Try again later. If the problem persists, contact your system administrator.
This problem occurs if one of the accounts or one of the contacts is the customer or the billing customer on a contract that has multiple line items.

You may receive a similar error message when you do the following actions:
  • You change the customer on a contract that has multiple line items.
  • You add a parent account to an account that is the customer on a contract that has multiple line items.
  • You add a parent account to a contact that is the customer on a contract that has multiple line items .
