The altitude reading is inaccurate when you use Streets and Trips

SYMPTOMS

When you use Microsoft Streets and Trips with GPS Locator or Microsoft Streets and Trips 2008 to determine altitude, the altitude reading is inaccurate.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because a GPS receiver uses four satellites to accurately determine altitude.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, verify that the altitude is accurate. To do this, close the GPS Pane in Streets & Trips 2006. The GPS Sensor pane should be displayed. This number of satellites that the sensor is detecting appears in the GPS pane. If there are at least four satellites, the altitude is accurate.

MORE INFORMATION

When the GPS receiver receives data from three satellites, Streets and Trips can accurately determine the latitude and longitude values. These values are needed for accurate street level navigation. To determine an accurate altitude, the GPS receiver must receive the signal from a fourth satellite.
