Error message when you try to open or to save a 2007 Office document: "Do you want to download a compatibility pack so that you can work with this file"

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You try to open or to save a 2007 Microsoft Office document in one of the programs that is listed in the "Applies to" section. The file uses the Open XML file format that is new to the 2007 Microsoft Office system. In this scenario, you may receive one of the following error messages:
This file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Excel. Do you want to download a compatibility pack so that you can work with this file?
This file was created by a newer version of Microsoft PowerPoint. Do you want to download a compatibility pack so that you can work with this file?
This file was created by a newer version of Microsoft Word. Do you want to download a compatibility pack so that you can work with this file?

CAUSE

This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
  • You install a file awareness update that is dated May 19, 2006. But you do not install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack. For more information about the file awareness updates that are dated May 19, 2006, click the following article numbers to view the articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

    The beta versions of these files will continue to work until the beta expires. For more information about when the Beta versions of the 2007 Microsoft Office programs expire, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Additionally, the following condition is true:
  • You open or save one of the following 2007 Office file types.

    Microsoft Office Excel 2007:
    • An Excel 2007 binary workbook file (.xlsb)
    • An Excel 2007 workbook file (.xlsx)
    • An Excel 2007 macro-enabled workbook file (.xlsm)
    • An Excel 2007 template file (.xltx)
    • An Excel 2007 macro-enabled template file (.xltm)
    • An Excel 2007 add-in file (.xlam)
    Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007:
    • A PowerPoint 2007 presentation file (.pptx)
    • A PowerPoint 2007 macro-enabled presentation file (.pptm)
    • A PowerPoint 2007 template file (.potx)
    • A PowerPoint 2007 macro-enabled template file (.potm)
    • A PowerPoint 2007 show file (.ppsx)
    • A PowerPoint 2007 macro-enabled show file (.ppsm)
    Microsoft Office Word 2007:
    • A Word 2007 document file (.docx)
    • A Word 2007 macro-enabled document file (.docm)

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the Compatibility Pack. To do this, use one of the following methods:

  • Microsoft Office XP Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Office XP Small Business Edition
  • Microsoft Office XP Students and Teachers
  • Microsoft Excel 2002 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Word 2002
  • Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003
