Error message when you try to install the SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Update: "The Sync task failed to download content from source location. (Error code: 0x80040100)"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Update, you experience the following symptoms:
  • If you click Automatically download the components from the web in the Setup Wizard for Microsoft SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Update, you receive the following error message when the Setup program tries to download the latest update manifest:
The Sync task failed to download content from source location. (Error code: 0x80040100)
  • If you open the drive:\SMS_CCM\Logs\Patchdownloader.log file, information that resembles the following is displayed:
Authentication of file %temp%\invCol.exe failed, error 0x800b0004

You experience this problem when you try to install version 2 or version 3 of the SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Update on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a change in the certificate that Dell uses to sign catalog-related components.

The root certificate that was issued to Dell by GlobalSign was not originally designed for use with code signing. The new root certificate that is issued to Dell by GlobalSign includes code signing capabilities. This problem occurs because Windows 2000 does not contain this updated root certificate and cannot verify the certificate chain. Therefore, the SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Dell Update synchronization task is unsuccessful.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, update the root certificate on the Windows 2000-based computer. To obtain instructions to update the root certificate, visit the following GlobalSign Web site:
http://www.globalsign.com/support/index.html (http://support.globalsign.net)
