The "Last Contacted" column is not updated for MOM agents after you install Microsoft Operations Manager 2005 Service Pack 1

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You apply Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) to a computer that is running MOM.
  • You push MOM 2005 SP1 to all the MOM agents.
In this scenario, the date and the time in the MOM 2005 Administrator Console are no longer updated.

Note The date and the time are displayed in the Last Contacted column of the Agent-managed Computers node in the MOM 2005 Administrator Console.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the MOM database is hosted on a computer other than the computer that is running MOM 2005.

When you apply MOM 2005 SP1, the service pack installation makes many changes to the MOM database. If MOM 2005 is installed on the same computer on which the MOM database is hosted, the service pack installation program automatically runs the Microsoft SQL Server database updates. However, if the MOM database is hosted on a remote computer, the SQL Server updates are not successfully applied to the MOM database.

If you run a network monitor program, you notice that the MOM 2005 SP1 agents send heartbeat information to the MOM server. However, because the MOM database is not successfully updated, these heartbeats are not processed. In this scenario, the MOM agents still receive new rules, and therefore the MOM agents can provide event data and performance data. However, the MOM agent heartbeat information is discarded.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, manually apply the MOM 2005 SP1 SQL Server script to the MOM database. To do this, follow these steps.

Important Before you perform this procedure, you must perform a full backup of the MOM database.
  1. Locate the following file from the MOM 2005 SP1 installation source:
    build_mom2005_sp1.sql
This file is located in the SP1UpdateCDImage\Support Tools\x86 folder and in the SP1UpdateCDImage\Support Tools\ia64 folder. Use the version of the file that corresponds to the operating system on which SQL Server is installed.
  2. Run this script in SQL Query Analyzer on the computer that is running SQL Server.
