SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use the Inventory Tool for Custom Updates (ITCU) in Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 to deploy a software update package.
  • The software update package automatically restarts a SMS client computer after the software update is installed.
  • When the countdown timer dialog box appears, one of the following conditions is true:
    • You have not logged on to the SMS client computer.
    • The "Welcome to Windows" logon screen is displayed on the SMS client computer.
In this scenario, you cannot access the "Welcome to Windows" logon screen to log on to the SMS client computer.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

You must have SMS 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed to apply this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace a previously released hotfix.

The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time.
