SYMPTOMS

When you run Common Gateway Interface (CGI) programs on a computer that is running Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0, you may receive the following error message:
HTTP 502.2 - Error in CGI application
Note You may receive this error message when the computer that running IIS 6.0 operates under heavy load conditions.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if initialization of the User32.dll file fails because of a particular race condition. This race condition occurs with the open process and the release process of a window station object.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Microsoft Windows Server 2003. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. To install this fix, your computer must be running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
