Error message when you try to install management point, a server locator point, or any other SMS site system component in Systems Management Server 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 management point, a server locator point, or any other SMS site system component, an error message that resembles one of the following examples is logged in the Sitecomp.log file on the site server.
Example 1: Status message 4912 when you try to install an SMS 2003 management point
Publishing ServerName as a Management Point into Active Directory.
SMS-MP-DEV-ServerName could not be updated, Win32 error = 5
STATMSG: ID=4912 SEV=E LEV=M SOURCE="SMS Server" COMP="SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER" SYS=ServerName SITE=DEV PID=2672 TID=3300 GMTDATE=Mon Dec 08 14:15:40.822 2003
ISTR0="cn=SMS-MP-DEV-ServerName" ISTR1="" ISTR2="" ISTR3="" ISTR4="" ISTR5="" ISTR6="" ISTR7="" ISTR8="" ISTR9="" NUMATTRS=0
Example 2: Error 5 when you try to install an SMS 2003 server locator point
Publishing ServerName as an SLP into Active Directory.
SLP Class SMS-SLP-DEV-ServerName already exists.
Updating SMS-SLP-DEV-ServerName could not be updated, error 5.
STATMSG: ID=4912 SEV=E LEV=M SOURCE="SMS Server" COMP="SMS_SITE_COMPONENT_MANAGER" SYS=ServerName SITE=DEV PID=2672 TID=3300 GMTDATE=Mon Dec 08 14:15:40.838 2003 ISTR0="cn=SMS-SLP-DEV-ServerName" ISTR1="" ISTR2="" ISTR3="" ISTR4="" ISTR5="" ISTR6="" ISTR7="" ISTR8="" ISTR9="" NUMATTRS=0
Polling complete.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the SMS site server computer account does not have the required permissions to access the Systems Management container in Active Directory.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must grant the site server computer account full rights to the Systems Management container and to all its child objects in Active Directory services.
