The SMS 2003 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates cannot determine the status of a computer that is running Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP1

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You use the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU) to determine a computer's update status. The computer in question is running Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack (SP1). In this scenario, the ITMU scanning process stops prematurely. When this problem occurs, the SMS advertisement returns status message 10007. This status message, in turn, contains the following error message:
The program for advertisement "Advertisement ID" failed ("Advertisement ID" - "Microsoft Updates Tool").
The failure description was "11412".
Additionally, you may receive the following error message in the SmsWusHandler.log file on the SMS client computer:
ScanPackage serviceID being used for this search is {d5f5abcd-c811-423d-9545-a16e635e6cf7}
ERROR: UpdateSearcher::Search() failed. ERROR: Search() failed with hRes=0x80240032 0x80240032 is the hresult value for the operation.
Returning 50 as the exit code.
Finally, the ScanWrapper.log file on the SMS client computer may contain the following error message:
ERROR: Failed while processing the executable.
Cmdline=["C:\WINNT\system32\VPCache\HK30000A\SmsWusHandler.exe" /Catalog:C:\WINNT\system32\VPCache\HK30000A\wsusscan.cab /OutputXml:C:\WINNT\system32\VPCache\HK30000A\Results.xml], CurrentDir=[C:\WINNT\system32\VPCache\HK30000A], ExitCode=[50]
ERROR: An error was encountered. Exiting Scan process ...

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Windows Update Agent incorrectly reports that 24 different language versions of Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 SP1 are installed on the computer that is running Windows SharePoint Services 2.0.

Typically, only one language version for each service pack is installed on a particular computer. However, in this case, the ITMU detects service packs for all available language versions. And because of a limitation in the Windows Update Agent, the ITMU cannot continue with the scanning process when the total number of reported service packs exceeds 31. This limitation is based on the total number of service packs across all products that are reported as either "applicable" or "installed" by the Windows Update Agent.

RESOLUTION

This problem has been fixed in Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
