You receive an error message when you connect to the Project Web Access 2003 default home page or to the Windows SharePoint Services default home page

SYMPTOMS

When you connect to the Microsoft Office Project Web Access 2003 default home page or to the Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services default home page, you receive the following error message in Microsoft Internet Explorer:
The virtual server referenced here is not in the config database.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Project Server Web site and the Windows SharePoint Service Web site were extended by using the IP address instead of the computer name.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps.
  1. Unextend the Web site. Then, extend the Web site again. To do this, follow these steps.

Note Existing sites will no longer be available to users.
    1. Start SharePoint Central Administration.
    2. Under Virtual Server Configuration, click Extend or upgrade virtual server.
    3. Under Virtual Server List, click complete list, and then click the link to the Windows SharePoint Services Web site.
    4. Under Virtual Server Management, click Remove Windows SharePoint Services from virtual server.
    5. Under Remove Windows SharePoint Services, click Remove without deleting content databases, and then click OK when you receive the Internet Explorer message. Then, click OK again.
    6. Under Virtual Server Configuration, click Extend or upgrade virtual server, and then click the link to the Web site.
    7. Under Provisioning Options, click Extend and map to another virtual server.
    8. Select the appropriate application pool, select the appropriate virtual server name in the Server Mapping section, type the site owner e-mail address, and then click OK.
  2. Exclude your Project Server site from Windows SharePoint Services. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Start SharePoint Central Administration.
    2. Under Virtual Server Configuration, click Extend or upgrade virtual server.
    3. Under Virtual Server List, click complete list, and then click the link to the Windows SharePoint Services Web site.
    4. Under Virtual Server Management, click Define managed paths.
    5. Under Add a new Path, type your Project Server namespace in the Path box. For example, type /ProjectServer.
    6. Click Excluded path in the Type list, and then click OK.
