The MOM 2005 Agent automatically installs the Active Directory Management Pack helper objects and the Exchange Server Management Pack helper objects

SYMPTOMS

When you "Push" install the Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM) 2005 Agent, the Active Directory Management Pack helper objects and the Microsoft Exchange Server Management Pack helper objects are automatically installed on the member server and on the domain controller. This behavior occurs even when the Active Directory Management Pack and the Exchange Server Management Pack are not installed on the MOM 2005 server.

CAUSE

The Active Directory Management Pack helper objects and the Exchange Server Management Pack helper objects are installed by design. If you later install Active Directory on a member server, the Active Directory Management Pack helper objects and the Exchange Server Management Pack helper objects are already available.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, you must install the MOM 2005 Agent manually. You can use command-line switches to run the manual agent installation silently. If you run a silent installation, you can use Group Policy or SMS to distribute the agent software.

MORE INFORMATION

The Active Directory Management Pack Component Object Model (COM) helper object (OOMAD) is used by several Active Directory Management Pack monitoring scripts for making system calls that are unavailable in Microsoft Visual Basic Scripting Edition (VBScript).

The MOM 2005 and MOM 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Release Notes state that if you do a manual or "silent" agent installation, the Active Directory Management Pack helper objects and the Exchange Server Management Pack helper objects are not installed automatically. However, the MOM release notes do not state that a "Push" agent installation installs the helper objects.

To remove the Active Directory Management Pack helper objects and the Exchange Server Management Pack helper objects from a member server, use Add or Remove Programs. If the Active Directory Management Pack and the Exchange Server Management Pack have not been deployed, you can also use Add or Remove Programs to remove the helper objects from domain controllers.

If the Active Directory Management Pack or the Exchange Server Management Pack is deployed after the helper objects have been removed, the helper objects for the management pack must be manually installed by running the appropriate .msi file. The .msi file is located in the support tools folder.
