Error message when you use Explorer View in a document library in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0: "Unexpected error occurred" or "Explorer View requires Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater and Web Folders"
You experience one or more of the following symptoms when you work in a document library in a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 Web site:
- You change the view from All Documents view to Explorer View. Then, you try to create a new subfolder in the document library. However, you receive the following error message:
Unexpected error occurred.
You receive this error message even though you successfully created other subfolders in the document library. - You browse a subfolder in the document library. Then, you try to change the view from All Documents view to Explorer View. The view does not change to Explorer View. Instead, you receive the following error message:
Explorer View requires Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater and Web Folders.
The "Explorer View requires Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater and Web Folders" error message has several different causes.
One cause of the error messages that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section is that the URL that represents the path of the folder contains more than 260 characters. The maximum length of a URL in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is 260 characters.
To work around this behavior, use shorter folder names.
URLs in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 must have a site relative path of 260 characters or less.
Note A site relative path includes everything that follows the site root in the path.
Additionally, you cannot have any single file name or folder name that is more than 128 characters in a URL.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
