The name of a subsite is not updated in the top link bar or in the Quick Launch of the top-level Web site in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0

SYMPTOMS

You rename a subsite that is located in the top-level Web site of a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 site collection. To do this, you change the name of the subsite in the Title box on the General Settings page. The name of the subsite is changed as expected. However, the following two areas of the top-level Web site still use the old name of the subsite:
  • The top link bar
  • The Quick Launch on the Home page

CAUSE

Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 does not correctly update the name of a subsite in these areas of a top-level Web site after you change the name of the subsite.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, change the name of the subsite in the top link bar and in the Quick Launch of the top-level Web site. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Connect to the top-level Web site.
  2. Change the name that appears for the subsite in the top link bar. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Site Actions, and then click Site Settings.
    2. On the Site Settings page, click Top link bar under Look and Feel.
    3. Click the Edit button next to the name of the subsite.
    4. On the Edit Link page, type the name of the subsite in the Type the description box, and then click OK.
  3. Change the name that appears for the subsite in the Quick Launch. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Site Actions, and then click Site Settings.
    2. On the Site Settings page, click Quick Launch under Look and Feel.
    3. Click the Edit button next to the name of the subsite.
    4. On the Edit Link page, type the name of the subsite in the Type the description box, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

Unfortunately this solution would'nt work for me as I am inheriting the parent site top level menu. Should work ok for the Quick Links as they are site dependent but the top level links inherit from the root. e.g. top level menu of an intranet meaning the top level menu is self managing.
