Status messages are not sent to a Systems Management Server 2003 site server

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You use an operating system image installation CD on a destination computer to manually start a Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Operating System Deployment (OSD) image.
  • The destination computer does not send status messages to the SMS site server during the deployment process.
However, when you use an unattended file to deploy the new client operating system, the destination computer does send status messages to the SMS site server.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when the installation process is started manually. This behavior does not occur when the installation process is started by advertising an SMS package or by using an unattended file to deploy a new client operating system.

Consider a scenario where the manual installation and the installation that uses an unattended file both sent status messages to the SMS site server. If this occurred, you would be unable to determine which type of installation was sending the status message. This could lead to incorrect or confusing status messages being sent to the SMS site server.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
