Error message when you try to open a Web site in FrontPage 2003 or to extend the site by using FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions: "Server Error: Error 5, Error in opening registry key"

SYMPTOMS

You try to open a Web site in Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003. Alternatively, you try to extend the Web site by using Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions. When you do this, you may receive the following error message:
Server Error: Error 5, Error in opening registry key \software\KeyName

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the permissions settings on the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\
registry subkey are overwritten when a third-party application is installed.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Run Regmon for Windows NT/9x.

    To download Regmon, visit the following Systernals Web site:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963881.aspx (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963881.aspx)
    Note Do not set any filters for Regmon.
  2. Try to open a Web site in FrontPage 2003. Alternatively, try to extend the Web site by using FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions.
  3. When you receive the error message, click Capture in Regmon.
  4. Copy the results that you captured in Regmon, paste the results into a Microsoft Excel worksheet, and then filter the results for the term "ACCESS DENIED."
  5. Note the account for which the
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\
    registry subkey displays "ACCESS DENIED."
  6. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  7. Locate and then click the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 5. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
  8. Select the account that is mentioned in step 5, and then click to select the Allow check box for Read permissions.
  9. Click OK.
