An in-place upgrade to the release version of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or SharePoint Server 2007 is not completed successfully

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. The servers in a server farm are running a beta version of Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. You back up and then restore data to the servers in this server farm. Then, you try to perform an in-place upgrade of the servers in the server farm to the release version of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or SharePoint Server 2007. However, the in-place upgrade is not completed successfully.

Additionally, when you view the Timer Job Status page in SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration, you may see that one or more upgrade timer jobs are either still running or were not completed successfully. For example, you may see that one or more timer jobs that contain the word "upgrade" are either still running or were not completed successfully.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the upgrade timer jobs that are still running or that were not completed successfully prevent the upgrade operation from completing successfully.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, disable the upgrade timer jobs that are still running or that were not completed successfully before you upgrade to the release version of Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or SharePoint Server 2007. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start SharePoint 3.0 Central Administration.
  2. Click Operations, and then click Timer job status under Global Configuration.
  3. Note the upgrade timer jobs that appear in the list of timer jobs, and then follow the steps that are appropriate for your situation:
    • If the list of timer jobs contains upgrade timer jobs that are still running or that were not completed successfully, disable the upgrade timer job. To do this, follow these steps:
      1. Click Operations, and then click Timer job definitions under Global Configuration.
      2. In the list of timer jobs, click the upgrade timer job that you want to disable, and then click Disable.
    • If the list of timer jobs does not contain any upgrade timer jobs that are still running or that were not completed successfully, open the Upgrade.log file. In the Upgrade.log file, look for errors that were logged during the upgrade operation.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
