When you run the SMS 2003 PatchInstall.exe program to install updates on client computers, those updates may not be installed

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 PatchInstall.exe program to install updates on client computers, those updates may not be installed. The unsuccessful update installation information is logged in the %windir%\System32\CCM\Logs\PatchInstall.log file on the client computer.

You may experience this issue if the following conditions are true:
  • You use the version of the PatchInstall.exe program that is included with SMS 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or with SMS 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2).
  • You use the PatchInstall.exe program outside the SMS Agent Host service (Ccmexec.exe). For example, you do not use an SMS 2003 program to run the PatchInstall.exe program.
Note You may experience these conditions in a scenario where you try to use the PatchInstall.exe program to install updates as part of an operating system deployment (OSD) operation.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because SMS 2003 SP1 and later versions of SMS 2003 only support the PatchInstall.exe program for use with the SMS Advanced Client or for use with an SMS program.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, create an SMS program that uses the PatchInstall.exe program, and then use an SMS advertisement to distribute the program to SMS clients.

MORE INFORMATION

When the Execution Manager thread of the SMS Agent Host service detects a request to run the PatchInstall.exe program, the Execution Manager thread transfers the execution of the PatchInstall.exe program to other internal SMS components. The Execution Manager thread itself does not run the program. If you start the PatchInstall.exe program outside the SMS Agent Host service environment, this execution transfer does not occur. Therefore, the PatchInstall.exe program may not update the client computer successfully.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 1
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003 Service Pack 2
